Utrecht, 23 juni 2016 - Stamcellen uit de darm van patiënten met taaislijmziekte (cystic fibrosis of CF) kunnen in het laboratorium voorspellen of een bepaald medicijn al dan niet zal werken. Artsen kunnen hierdoor eenvoudiger de juiste geneesmiddelen selecteren de voor optimale behandeling van een individuele patiënt. Onderzoekers van het UMC Utrecht publiceren deze resultaten vandaag in Science Translational Medicine.

NIEUWEGEIN, 19 APRIL 2016 - Een medicijn met een ingebouwd 'controlelampje', kan een arts in de toekomst vertellen of het wel of niet zinvol is een duur of riskant medicijn te verstrekken aan patiënten met sarcoïdose. Dat suggereren ziekenhuisapotheker drs. Roeland Vis van het St. Antoniusziekenhuis in Nieuwegein en collega's in een recent nummer van het tijdschrift European Respiratory Journal. De onderzoekers gaven een groep patiënten met de ernstige longziekte sarcoïdose een medicijn met daaraan gekoppeld een onschuldige radioactieve stof. Door vervolgens te kijken bij welke patiënten de radioactiviteit zich ophoopte rond het aangedane longweefsel, kregen zij een indruk van de aan- of afwezigheid van het biologische aangrijpingspunt voor het medicijn.
