De Nederlandse Cystic Fibrosis Stichting, het UMC Utrecht en de stichting Hubrecht Organoid Technology maakten een korte informatiefilm over de 15-jarige CF-patiënt Madelief Meijering. Haar longfunctie steeg van 70 naar 100 procent, nadat ze nieuwe medicijnen kreeg. 'Op mijn minidarmpje hebben ze de stof getest die in het nieuwe medicijn zit en het werkte. Daarom slik ik nu deze medicijnen', zegt Madelief. Minidarmpjes (organoïden) zijn opgekweekte stamcellen van een patiënt, waarop in het laboratorium kan worden onderzocht of hij of zij op bepaalde stoffen reageert. On October 16th, 2015, the NRS platform animal models in pulmonary research organizes the 5th symposium in Utrecht, (De Uithof, David de Wiedgebouw, room M2.01, Universiteitsweg 99, Utrecht). Our aim is to optimize the use of experimental models in lung research and to stimulate and facilitate collaborations between research groups of the academia and industry. During this 5th symposium, experts in the field, and PhD students will give an overview of the animal models used in pulmonary research such as pulmonary infection, asthma, lung emphysema, neonatal lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, etc.

ROTTERDAM, 14 OKTOBER 2015 - Mensen met de chronische longziekte COPD hebben 20% meer kans op het krijgen van een herseninfarct of een hersenbloeding, dan gezonde mensen. Dat blijkt uit een langlopend onderzoek onder ruim dertienduizend Rotterdammers. De resultaten van dit onderzoek worden deze maand gepubliceerd in het Amerikaanse tijdschrift voor longartsen (het American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine) door arts-onderzoeker Marileen Portegies en collega's van het Erasmus MC in Rotterdam.

Voor het project Faces of Science kunt u talentvolle promovendi nomineren die via blogs een inkijkje willen bieden in hun leven als onderzoeker. Op de website Faces of Science bloggen al dertig jonge onderzoekers uit de hele breedte van de wetenschap over hun onderzoek en hun wel en wee als onderzoeker. De site is bedoeld om scholieren en studenten te enthousiasmeren voor de wetenschap en hij biedt de promovendus de kans om zichzelf en zijn of haar onderzoek op allerlei manieren te presenteren.

Luchtvervuiling maakt kinderen al heel jong ziek: hun geboortegewicht en hun longfunctie blijven achter, zelfs bij kleine hoeveelheden luchtvervuiling. Dat meldt het Longfonds (voorheen Astma Fonds) vandaag op basis van Europees onderzoek. De studie komt dit weekend in Amsterdam aan de orde tijdens het grootste internationale wetenschappelijke congres over longen. In de stad is veel aandacht voor gezonde longen en luchtkwaliteit.
The Chiesi Foundation's main purpose is to promote, encourage and advance medical research worldwide, in order to better understand the patients' needs and improve their management. Since its establishment, the Foundation supports scientific research projects focused on the fields of neonatology and pulmonology, by providing annual grants. Every year, the Chiesi Foundation publishes calls for proposals for the submission of new research projects, to be evaluated by the Scientific Committee of the Foundation.
